3 Years In: Project 'Financial Freedom'
It has now been more than 3 years since I started my ‘Financial Freedom’ project.
And I couldn’t be more bullish.
Sure, some of this euphoria is from the current market sentiment — new all time highs every other week. But I don’t think that’s all. Far from it.
What I love most is that I’m thinking, planning, and using my money in a more rational way than before. I actually pay attention to this stuff now!
I know what matters to me: freedom. And I’m spending the majority of my money on that.
I consider even small details — like what the foreign exchange fee is on my credit cards (yes I spent quite some time looking up different cards a few days ago). All the nitty-gritty stuff isn’t super important — the big stuff is what matters. But I now enjoy this. I find it interesting to explore and learn about our financial system. Especially how I fit into that system.
But small details isn’t what will make me financially independent. What really drives the needle is the big stuff: how much money I spend and on what.
I’ve had my ups and downs and I’m sure I will continue to do so. The consumer beast inside me won’t be tamed easily. Maybe never. But at least I’m doing much better than I was before all this started. And I guess maybe that is as good as it will get. I’m still living in a society obsessed with consumption and as long as that is the case I’ll be surrounded by temptations.
This has been the best project I have ever started. Money is a big part of our lives and we should think about our relationship to it. I stumbled upon the topic by chance and I’m glad I did. I want to share what I have learned so if you are interested here is a small guide I created earlier this year.
