Betting on Innovation
When I started investing I didn’t think it would be this fun.
It feels good when numbers go up and less so when they go down. But that’s not what I’m talking about.
I’m talking about the feeling I get being part of the future. Having a stake in the innovation that happens all over the world.
It is just more interesting to read business news when you own part of the business you are reading about.
I head a theory a few weeks ago that said governments generally want their population to own houses because they then have a bigger stake in the nation — they have something to lose and they want the government to help them protect it. The theory goes that this means homeowners are more on the side of the government. They are less likely to rebel.
I guess it makes sense.
And I think the same applies to stocks and the economy. If you own a stake in it more directly, you want businesses to thrive. And when business is good, our lives are usually improving. (The reverse may also be true: if you do not directly gain from a booming economy you may feel envious).
Of course it is a bit more complicated than that. But I do think it is better when people have a solid stake in the future — a reason to want a better world tomorrow than today. We should all want that — and making it a bit more tangible can’t hurt.
Anyway, back to where this started: I really enjoy betting on an optimistic future. You should try it if you haven’t already. There are so many interesting things going on all the time these days — what a time to be alive!
